The Chipmunk’s Story

  • Stories

King Rama was building a great bridge over the ocean to an enemy island where his beloved wife was imprisoned. His powerful friends, the monkey kings and the monkey generals, hoisted gigantic stone boulders on their shoulders and with their magical powers flew them through the air so that the bridge could be rapidly completed.

During this mammoth effort, a tiny chipmunk, eager to serve her beloved master, scampered about carrying tiny pebbles between her paws for the bridge. When the superhuman monkeys saw this, they rolled on the ground with laughter.

“What do you think a tiny pipsqueak like you can do to help this great mission?” they guffawed. The little animal sank in a sad little heap on the bridge, with tears of sadness, trickling down her nose.

Suddenly, King Rama appeared. Knowing all that had transpired, he gazed at the chipmunk with a look of infinite love. “My little daughter, your tiny effort is as great as the most fantastic feat of strength of any of these powerful monkeys, for though you are small, you are serving me with all your heart and strength.”

He picked up the little chipmunk and stroked her back. The animal felt total bliss and happiness at King Rama’s divine touch. And where Rama’s three fingers had touched her, three bright stripes appeared, to remind all that no matter how small one may be, if one serves to their utmost capacity, the blessings of the universe are always with you.
