Once there was a farmer who worked in her vegetable fields. One afternoon as she was walking home something was moving in the bushes. When she saw what it was, she exclaimed, “Why, it’s a baby fox!” She gave the fox kitten, something to eat.

A few days later she found the fox sitting beside the road waiting for her. The fox barked and jumped up and down. I seemed to want the farmer to follow it. The little fox led the farmer right to his den behind the hill.

“Ah, this is where you live, is it?” said the farmer. She entered the fox’s home. The little fox’s mother was sick in bed. The mother fox thanked the farmer for feeding her son. She gave the farmer a red scarf in return. “Thank you.” The farmer put the gift in her pocket and returned to her fields to work.

As she worked, she felt hot, so she tied the scarf over her head. Suddenly, she could hear someone say: “I fell on my back, and I can’t move! Help!” The farmer looked around, but no one. Then she saw a green shiny bug on its back just in front of her. She turned the bug over so it could move on.

Then she heard: “Someone stole my eggs!” The farmer looked around. Again, there was no one to be seen. Then, she saw two birds in a tree. She took the scarf off.  There was no talking. She put the scarf back on. She heard talking once again.

“Oh, I can understand the languages of the birds, animals, insects, plants, and maybe the mountains and other non-living things!” said the farmer.   “This must be a magic scarf.”

“I wonder what I will hear next?”
